The January transfer window has now closed but there's plenty to unpack.

Transfer deadline day was as busy as ever, with Everton announcing Frank Lampard as their new manager, as well as the signings of Dele and Donny van de Beek. Tottenham Hotspur were also busy, signing both Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus, while offloading Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Bryan Gil.

Liverpool lost out on Fabio Carvalho, Newcastle United finally signed Dan Burn, and Arsenal announced the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Barcelona club president Joan Laporta said they are due to unveil Aubameyang today "if everything continues well".

We'll also have build-up to tonight's Old Firm and the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final between Burkina Faso and Senegal.

10-man Derby slip to defeat in West Yorkshire.

Could Carlos Corberan's side get promoted? My university housemate will be dancing a jig in the street if they go up.
FT 2-0: Was always going to be a tall task after Stearman's red early on. Derby defended resolutely for most of the match and were undone by a lucky deflection. Given the injuries and age of the squad that finished the match, #DCFC can leave with their heads held high.

Roy Keane is set to hold talks with Sunderland over the vacant managerial position at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland have begun the search for a new boss after Lee Johnson was sacked on Sunday night and Keane is expected to be among the candidates formally considered by the League One club.

The 50-year-old has been away from frontline management since leaving Ipswich Town in 2011 but two years in charge of Sunderland included promotion to the Premier League in 2007.

Senegal went 2-0 after a goal from Idrissa Gueye, before Burkina Faso pulled one back.

However, a Burkinabe player just managed to slide tackle his own teammate in midfield, the ball spilled to Sadio Mane, and the Liverpool winger dinked it home to send Senegal to the AFCON final. 3-1.

Liverpool have received a major boost with the return of Thiago Alcantara to full training ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup tie with Cardiff City at Anfield.

The Spanish midfielder has rejoined Jurgen Klopp’s squad after seven weeks out due to a sprain of the hip capsule.

He hasn’t featured since the Premier League win over Newcastle United at Anfield on December 16. Last month Klopp rubbished rumours that the former Bayern Munich playmaker would be out for the rest of the season.

Thiago is desperate to make up for lost time and kick-start what has been a frustrating campaign for him on a personal level so far. He has been limited to just eight Premier League starts due to a calf injury, a bout of COVID-19 and a painful hip problem.

Retail therapy can often lift a bad mood. But when this turns into compulsive buying, the purchases made may not end up being the best things to buy.

This also applies to buying stagnating players who used to be part of the biggest names in football.

Dele Alli and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are two key names from the January transfer window that show this. They will have a lot to prove to show they weren't unjustified purchases.

It is believed that some efforts were made to convince Hitchen to stay. However, it is thought his decision to leave in pursuit of another opportunity had already been made.

Barcelona have left Dani Alves out of their squad for the Europa League knockout stages.

The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Barcelona would have to leave one of their four January signings — of Alves, Ferran Torres, Adama Traore and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang — out of their squad because UEFA only allows three additions for the second phase.

Torres, Traore and Aubameyang have all been included in the squad — as well as Ousmane Dembele, who remains at the club despite a failed move away during the transfer window. To read more, click here.

Southampton have announced the signing of Will Armitage from Cheltenham Town.

The 16-year-old central defender has joined on a scholarship deal and will initially feature for the Under-18’s.

He said: “It feels amazing to be here, really good. It feels great to be in such a great facility, in a great area, with a great bunch of lads and I’m really looking forward to getting started.

“I’ve always said since I was a young lad that I wanted to be a professional footballer and I’m just one step closer now which is amazing and Southampton will give me those opportunities.

“I do see a real pathway at Southampton, the 18s into the B team and then into first-team. Hopefully that pathway can lead to the first team for me.”
