Spain boss Luis Enrique will only have one week to prepare for the tournament
Next season’s LaLiga Santander calendar may cause issues with the 2022 Qatar World Cup, but the dates are not yet confirmed and there is time to alter them.
At present the season will begin on August 12, 2022, and end in June 2023 – a month later than usual. It is worth remembering that this season’s LaLiga Santander campaign will finish on May 22, 2022.
In addition, the Final Four of the 2023 UEFA Nations League will take place from June 14-18 and that time will have to be made to accommodate for the winter World Cup in Qatar.
The Qatar World Cup will be played between November 21 and December 18, 2022. As it stands Spain boss Luis Enrique will only be able to have his La Roja squad together for a week before the tournament starts, as the provisional final matchday for next season before the winter break is November 13, 2022.
FIFA has already said that all leagues should align their calendars so that no nation is hindered in their preparations for the World Cup.
France has already confirmed the dates for the 2022/23 Ligue 1 season and it is the same as the provisional LaLiga calendar, with the league breaking up for the World Cup on November 13 and the season finishing on June 4.
The Premier League season will start on August 4 and will keep its tradition of having fixtures over Christmas, despite the World Cup, which is giving the Spanish Football Federation food for thought.
Spain’s Copa del Rey will begin in December 2022, as it has done this season and will have many games in January to compensate for the pause brought on by the World Cup.
January 2023 will also see the Supercopa de Espana be played in Saudi Arabia.
As for the Champions League, the group phase will begin in the first week of September and end on November 2. The matchdays will be spread out as follows:
