On Wednesday, Brian Kelly sat down with the media to talk about his new defensive staff.
He spoke about the new defensive coordinator, Matt House, new defensive line coach/run-game coordinator, Jamar Cain, new safeties coach Kerry Cooks, new cornerbacks coach, Robert Steeples, and new recruiting coordinator/special teams coordinator Brian Polian.
“As I looked at putting a staff together, assembling a staff, we’re in the SEC, we’re in the toughest division of the SEC, you need experienced coaches, coaches who know what winning is all about and how difficult it is to win in this conference,” Kelly said, according to 247Sports. “And then you need to recruit. If you checked those three boxes, those were the things I was looking for in putting today’s staff together.”
He also commented on where he thought the program stood if the Tigers had to play football today.
We’re not ready to play,” Kelly said. “If we had to play tomorrow, we’re not ready yet. But we’ll be ready.
“It’s going to be a process for us. I like the fact, like many teams I’ve had in the past, with this being my fifth time I’ve done this, there is a want-to. They recognize and are aware of what they’ve done the last two years, and cumulatively, it’s been .500. That’s not good enough. There is a desire to want to change that, so there is that want-to.
“Now, we’ve got a lot of things we have to work on to be able to be the championship program we want to be. Just like everything else, as long as we have a group of players that are committed to what we want to do here, we’re pretty confident that we can get them there come opening day.”
With the full staff now in place, the Tigers will turn their attention to spring practice, which begins on March 23.
