The Oregon Ducks and USC Trojans were both affected by the coaching carousel this offseason. Lincoln Riley came to Heritage Hall. A few weeks later, Mario Cristobal left the Oregon program to go to Miami. Oregon then turned to Dan Lanning to replace him, dipping into the Georgia pool of assistants to find their guy.
While they lost a top recruiter in Cristobal, Lanning hasn’t been bad so far for the Ducks. He has Oregon trending up in terms of recruiting momentum, per Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News:
The Ducks lost one of the top recruiters in the country when Mario Cristobal bolted for Miami.
But his replacement, Dan Lanning, served notice that the Ducks will remain a force — first by signing a handful of coveted players late in the 2021-22 cycle, then by positioning the Ducks for a first-rate class in ’23.
They already have a commitment from four-star cornerback Cole Martin.
“There’s reason for guarded optimism,” Gorney said. “Oregon sells itself.”
Oregon is off to a really good start in 2023 and the Ducks need a big class for that cycle.
With Lincoln Riley now in the conference, the pressure is on the Ducks to keep up in terms of recruiting. If they can, it will make for some exciting battles over the next few years with USC. The two schools are likely to meet in future Pac-12 Championship Games. Their recruits are bound to go up against each other on the big stage.
