Al Ahly have returned back to winning ways with a 4-1 victory over Pharco FC to go top of the Egyptian Premier League.
The Red Devils came off a disappointing defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League were in dire need of a win to regain their confidence.
And that was apparent from the get-go as they needed just five minutes to open the scoring through Mohamed Sherif, who ended his goal drought, which started back in December.
The goal came after a great teamwork play by the Al Ahly players, which ended with Ahmed Abdelkader squaring the ball to Mohamed Sherif, and the striker managed to find the back of the net with a first-time finish.
Two minutes later, Al Ahly managed to grab their second of the game, this time through Mohamed Magdy Afsha as he found himself through on goal following a brilliant long defense-splitting ball, before beating Mohamed Sobhi from close range.
This wasn’t the end of it, Afsha was on the scoresheet once again in the 12th minute as Mohamed Hany’s cross was flicked off by Mohamed Sherif for Afsha to easily tap in the ball from inside the six-yard box.
Finding themselves 3-0 down just inside the opening 15th minutes, Pharco tried to get back into the game, which they managed to do in the 17th minutes after a long-range effort from Kingsly Sokari was parried away by El-Shennawy for Ahmed El-Seghiry to tap in the rebound.
Al Ahly had a huge chance to make it four through Amr El-Sulya after another long through ball from Rami Rabia, but El-Sulya’s effort inched off the post.
Mohamed Sherif then thought he completed his brace in the 40th minute after going around the keeper, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
The start of the second-half was all Pharco and they nearly got back into the game in the 55th minute, but Rezki Hamroune’s close-range effort was brilliantly denied by Mohamed El-Shennawy.
On the other hand, Al Ahly kept relying on the counter-attacks and had a clear-cut chance as Percy Tau went one-on-one with Mohamed Sobhi, but the keeper managed to snatch the ball from him.
The fourth goal for Al Ahly did eventually come in the 87th minute from substitute Hussein El-Shahat who received a ball from Ali Maaloul inside the box, before his shot got deflected into the back of the net.
The 4-1 win means that Al Ahly move top of the league with 25 points, two more than second-placed Pyramids FC, while Pharco remain seventh with 15 points.
The Reds will now shift their focus on their CAF Champions League campaign as they host Sudanese side Al-Merrikh in a crucial game on Saturday, March 5.
