Despite their loss, the Cardinals sit atop the NFC West still at 10-3, while the Rams improve to 9-4 — just one game behind their divisional rival.

Every once in a while, a group of people will remind you of what they have the potential to be. Earlier this season, the Rams did so in a win against Tampa Bay before a harsh reality check came courtesy of the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4. On Monday, although shorthanded after five players (all either starters or key rotational depth) went on the COVID-19/Reserve list over the past three days, the Rams put together a decisive 30-23 win against an Arizona team that has, since beating them back in October, been rolling.

“My initial reaction was, ‘You’ve got to be shittin’ me,'” said head coach Sean McVay seriously postgame, of the ongoing COVID-19 situation. The Rams were without starting cornerback Jalen Ramsey, recent starter Dont’e Deayon, put rookie rotational player Robert Rochell on injured reserve this week with a chest injury, didn’t have starting right tackle Rob Havenstein or starting tight end Tyler Higbee, and were without running back Darrell Henderson.

“This was a sign of a mentally tough team,” McVay said.

Matthew Stafford threw three touchdown passes to help the Rams get out to a two-touchdown lead in the third quarter and then Los Angeles fended off a determined comeback by the Cardinals to claim a 30-23 win in the Week 14 Monday night game.

Stafford completed 23 of 30 passes for 287 yards and threw scoring strikes to Odell Beckham, Jr., Cooper Kupp, and Van Jefferson. Kupp had a career high 13 receptions on 15 targets. Kyler Murray responded by throwing for 383 yards, but he did not have a touchdown pass for only the third time this year and tossed two interceptions.

Aaron Donald was the defensive standout of the game, as he tallied five tackles and three sacks, the last of which occurred on the final play of the game and clinched the victory for the Rams.

Andrew Whitworth became the first left tackle to ever start a game at the age of 40. A.J. Green went over the 10,000-yard receiving mark for a career, making him one of only five active players to do so. Kupp’s 123 receiving yards marks the ninth straight game he has posted 90 or more receiving yards, which ties him with Michael Irvin and Beckham for the longest such streak in the last 70 seasons (per NFL Research).

Kliff Kingsbury again avoids a field goal attempt and runs a lot of time off the clock trying to get a touchdown, but ends up having to relent and allow Prater to kick a 49-yard field goal to make it 30-23 LA.

Then, Arizona recovers the onside kick.

Only two wide receivers have ever had the kind of production stretch that Cooper Kupp has had of late.
.@CooperKupp has now topped 90+ receiving yards in 9 straight games, tying Hall of Famer Michael Irvin in 1995 and new teammate Odell Beckham Jr. in 2014 for the longest such streak in the last 70 seasons

The big play to Kupp leads the Rams to the Cardinals red zone but Arizona’s defense holds the line and LA has to settle for a 33-yard Matt Gay field goal to go up 30-20.

The Rams have a chance to truly put the game away after the big stop, but are able to gain only 17 yards on four plays and have to punt. Arizona begins its third drive of the second half from its 27-yard line.
Stafford sacked on third down; Rams have to punt. Bit of confusion on a middle combo and he held the ball; pressure got there (looked like without seeing replay).

Arizona moves 61 yards in 11 plays to the Rams 14-yard line but DeAndre Hopkins drops a fourth down catch that would have resulted in a first down for the Cardinals. Los Angeles takes over at its own 14 up 27-13 with 4:39 left in the third quarter.
Fourth and 2 in the RZ: Pass bounces incomplete out of Hopkins' hands and it's a turnover on downs.
That stop was huge. Shorthanded and shuffled around just about everywhere on very short notice, these Rams are so far showing up in all three phases tonight.

Jefferson may not be the best wide receiver on the Rams roster but he may be the fastest.
Van Jefferson was traveling 20.05 mph when he caught Stafford's deep pass, just the 12th reception this season where the receiver was traveling over 20 mph at the catch-point (and 11th-fastest).

Los Angeles makes the most of Floyd’s interception and scores on a terrific pass from Stafford to Kupp to get a 27-13 lead.
In response to Leonard Floyd's interception, Stafford hits Cooper Kupp for a four-yard TD. That's 14 points off defensive takeaways tonight. And not sure how Kupp made that play just now.
After just over 5 minutes into the third quarter, Rams took a 13-13 game and made it 27-13.

Las Vegas is expected to host the Super Bowl LVIII in 2024, according to multiple reports on Monday. The Las Vegas Review-Journal was the first to report the game would be moved,

Super Bowl LVIII is currently scheduled to take place in New Orleans, but due to the addition of a 17th regular-season game, the league schedule will conflict with the city's annual Mardi Gras celebration. An announcement of the relocation is expected to be made official at the NFL owners' meetings on Wednesday, The Athletic confirmed.
