According to Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg, Chelsea are among the clubs in talks with Jules Kounde over a move in the summer. It appears the Premier League giants are keen on securing his services in the upcoming season, though they are expected to face stiff competition from both Barcelona and Real Madrid.
A product of the Bordeaux youth academy, Jules Kounde has enjoyed immense success since his move to Sevilla in 2019. In two and a half years, he has racked up 119 competitive appearances, firmly establishing himself as a first-team regular and one of the best young centre-backs in Europe.
The 23-year-old’s defensive partnership with Diego Carlos has been one of the pillars of Sevilla’s success under Jules Lopetegui. In addition to his excellent understanding with Carlos, the young Frenchman has made a solid impression with his technical brilliance and ability to play the ball out from the back.
Kounde is also among the most athletic defenders in La Liga, with his rapid burst of pace allowing to him make excellent defensive recoveries. He has a knack for scoring goals as well, thus making him one of the most well-rounded centre-backs in the Spanish top flight.
Chelsea will be crying out for centre-backs in the summer transfer window, as they brace themselves for the departure of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta. They all have their contracts expiring at the end of the season, with no extension in sight.
It could accentuate the need for defensive reinforcements, with Jules Kounde appearing to be an excellent option. As mentioned earlier, the young Frenchman is one of the most sought-after centre-backs in Europe thanks to his technical prowess that combines well with his pace and athleticism.
Kounde’s addition to the team can significantly improve Chelsea’s build-up play from the back allowing Thomas Tuchel to embrace a more possession-oriented football. He also has the pace and the physicality to thrive in the Premier League, and at the age of just 23, the Frenchman has a bright future ahead of him, potentially making him a smart long-term investment for the Blues next season.
