uton vs Chelsea LIVE!
Chelsea capped another seismic day in the Stamford Bridge club’s history by narrowly avoiding an FA Cup shock, edging past Luton 3-2 at Kenilworth Road.
Romelu Lukaku tapped home Timo Werner’s cross late on to thwart the Hatters’ dreams of a first quarter-final since 1994, on the day when Roman Abramovich signalled the impending end of his Blues reign.
Werner scored and made both Chelsea’s other goals on a solid night for the Germany forward, with Saul Niguez also clipping home.
Any notions of a nice and easy night were abruptly ended as soon as the unchallenged Reece Burke thumped in a second-minute header for the second-tier hosts.
Harry Cornick’s collected finish put Luton 2-1 up at half-time, after Saul’s equaliser, and dreaming of a major upset over last season’s beaten FA Cup finalists.
But Chelsea’s extra power and nous eventually applied enough of a squeeze to subdue the Hatters as Werner and Lukaku completed the comeback.
That was a classic cup tie.
Loads of credit to Luton for giving Chelsea a real fright. But that was a real show of resilience from Tuchel’s side to twice come back from a goal down to book their place in the quarter final.
Luton 2-3 Chelsea
They had to work really hard for it, but Chelsea eventually book their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Midway through the second-half, it looked like a huge shock was on. But Werner and Lukaku turned it around, and Tuchel’s side march on.
90 mins: Three minutes added on. Chelsea have the ball deep in Luton territory, just where they want to be.
Thomas Tuchel will be mightily relieved should his side come through this test.
87 mins: Hylton down claiming a free-kick, not going to get it.
Energy looks to have gone from the Luton players on the whole now, they’ve put in a huge effort up to this point. Hylton then goes charging into Kepa, very late.
84 mins: Chelsea controlling possession, and without the need to force things anymore.
Lukaku looks to play a clever one-two, but touch is a heavy one and the ball rolls through to Isted.
81 mins: Luton are coming again, throwing bodies forward and trying to get themselves back in it.
Still probably the best part of 15 minutes left including added time, so they’re still in with a shout.
And they’ll be delighted that it’s come through Lukaku. Patient build-up, Loftus-Cheek with a great pass to Werner.
He squares it into the box, Lukaku does make the run this time and he slides in to bundle it home.
78 mins: Wow, almost a disastrous moment from Sarr.
Under no pressure at all he passes it straight to Hylton, who would have been away on goal had he controlled. Heavy touch though and Sarr flies across to slide in.
75 mins: Werner is visibly more confident since that goal, bursts past his man and squares the ball into the box. Lukaku has stopped his run though, can’t get on the end of it.
Jorginho off, James on. Another reshuffle for Chelsea. Rudiger takes the armband.
Snodgrass on for Luton, making his debut for the Championship side.
