Man Utd could bring in a shock manager from La Liga to replace Ralf Rangnick amid concerns over the availability of Mauricio Pochettino, according to a report.
Pochettino has long been a target for the Old Trafford club, dating back to his days at Tottenham. He is currently in charge of Paris Saint-Germain, although sources suggest he may leave France this summer.
A report from Goal earlier this month claimed Pochettino is ‘at odds’ with the PSG hierarchy over their transfer policy. He wants the squad to be trimmed, but officials are instead focusing on new arrivals.
As such, Pochettino is ‘open’ to joining Man Utd, once the job becomes available this summer. Rangnick’s appointment is only temporary after all, and he will begin a consultancy role at the end of the season.
ESPN have now provided an update on Pochettino’s availability, and a move to Manchester is seemingly under threat.
According to their report, Pochettino could join Spanish titans Real Madrid to replace Carlo Ancelotti.
As such, Man Utd legend Sir Alex Ferguson has told the club to consider appointing Ancelotti if he becomes a free agent.
The Italian would be an impressive capture due to several reasons. First of all, he is a serial winner, having tasted domestic glory in Germany, Spain and Italy.
He has won the Champions League on three occasions – twice with Milan and once with Madrid, back in 2013-14.
Ancelotti also guided Chelsea to the Premier League and FA Cup in 2009-10, demonstrating his prior knowledge of English football. He had a stint at Everton between December 2019 and June 2021 but left to re-join Los Blancos.
Another attractive trait for the Red Devils is Ancelotti’s experience of dealing with big-name players. He has managed the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Kaka, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Andrea Pirlo during an illustrious career.
This should put him in a good position to deal with United’s current crop of stars, which includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba.
There are clearly many factors that would help Ancelotti to become a success at the Theatre of Dreams. But it remains to be seen if they can convince him to join, or if he will even become available in the summer.
Meanwhile, former United star Paul Parker has told the club to sell captain Harry Maguire, with the solution also offered to manager Ralf Rangnick.
“If United, in my opinion, were to get somewhere near to their money back on Harry Maguire, I think they’ll have to think about it,” he told the Daily Express.
“I think [Victor] Lindelof and Varane, you know, they could build something on there maybe, in a mode of what they’re looking for and where the club wants to be.
“You’re talking about players who are definitely more agile, a little bit quicker, better defenders in one against one situations. I think you have to look at it that way.
“I don’t know if it’s going to happen. Me, personally, for United to go forward, that’s the starting area.”
