The Uruguayan’s contract expires at the end of the season and he is fully expected to leave the club as a free agent in the summer.
Cavani has been unable to become a regular for the Reds due to constant injury problems, but last season he was brilliant at times and warranted a new deal.
Twelve months on I think it would be best for him to part ways – mostly because he is rarely available, and Cristiano Ronaldo is a better option if you are going to have an ageing striker.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Cavani is ruling out a move to River Plate, despite previous reports hinting that he could move to the club after United.
It seems La Liga would be the 34-year-old’s preferred destination before returning to South America.

Romano tweeted: “Edinson Cavani is expected to leave Man United in June as free agent – his priority will be to try and experience in La Liga. Spain could be his next destination, but Cavani will only decide in the coming months.
“River Plate, not even an option for Cavani’s future.”
Ultimately, the former PSG forward’s departure could represent a good chance for the next manager to invest in young attacking players to bolster the squad.
