134 years ago today in the town of Voss, Norway, a boy was born by the name of Knute Kenneth Rockne.
Rockne moved to Chicago at the age of five and grew up in the Logan Square neighborhood.  After working post-high school Rockne saved money and attended college at Notre Dame, enrolling at 22 years old.
The rest is history.
Rockne starred on the Notre Dame football team from 1910-1913 with his biggest moment as a player coming in the 1913 upset of Army at West Point.
In 1920 Rockne was hired as Notre Dame’s head football coach and turned the program into a national powerhouse.  His teams went an incredible 105-12-5 in 13 seasons, winning a Rose Bowl and three national championships before Rockne tragically died in a plane crash on March 31, 1931.
Rockne was as instrumental as anyone in not just building the Notre Dame football program but in turning college football into such a popular sport nationally.  Celebrate Rockne’s birthday by taking a look at a handful of pictures of the legend below.
