Out-of-favour defender Sergi Roberto has made peace with the fact that his Barcelona days are now a thing of the past, and in order to stay pertinent, he is now preferring a move to the English Premier League.
As reported by Mundo Deportivo, the versatile defender will be released by the end of the season when his current deal runs out. Although he is still waiting for Barcelona to come up with a renewal offer, the Catalan management has rather decided to go with someone young and someone more dynamic.
In that case, Milan midfielder Franck Kessie, who will be a free agent at the end of the season, has been preferred over anyone else. As such, even if Barcelona decide to hand Roberto a new deal, one can rightly expect it to be nothing but a mere formality.
This basically means Roberto, one of the longest-serving players of the current Barcelona roster, will have to take a substantial pay cut – 75% to be precise – if he tends to fulfil the wish of continuing at his boyhood club.
And so, a move away remains an ideal solution for everyone involved. Interestingly, despite struggling for fitness in recent years, the six-time La Liga champion has no shortage of offers. Earlier, journalist Toni Juanmarti confirmed he is looking to move to the Major League Soccer (MLS), but has now decided to play in a rather competitive league to stay in Europe.
In that regard, the English Premier League has emerged as his next potential destination as it has always attracted Roberto’s interest.
Robert, a two-time UEFA Champions League winner with Barcelona, underwent surgery in December and is now nearing full fitness. And even for him, the primary objective is to achieve 100% fitness and help Xavi to challenge whatever is left in the season.
