Barcelona have the chance to rise up to third in the LaLiga Santander table on Sunday afternoon, as they take on Elche at the Estadio Martinez Valero. That’s it! The full time whistle sounds and Barcelona have produced a comeback victory. They trailed at half time because of Fidel‘s opener, but they fought back with a Ferran Torres goal and a Memphis Depay penalty. That secures a vital three points for the Catalan side.
Elche want a handball penalty again. They didn’t get the last one and they don’t get this one either. The ball does strikes Sergio Busquets‘ arm, but it was by his side.
Barcelona want to kill this one off and substitute Adama Troare tries his luck, but his effort from a tight angle is saved. It’s still just the one goal lead for the Catalan side, with five total minutes of stoppage time.
The Elche players swarm the referee as they want a penalty of their own for a Jordi Alba handball. But, his arms are by his side, so no spot kick is given that time.
Barcelona take the lead and they do so from the spot. VAR spots a handball from Antonio Barragan and it’s a penalty. Memphis Depay steps up and emphatically fires into the top corner. 2-1.
He scored the equaliser, but Ferran Torres could have had a few others. He has provoked a couple of saves and now fires just wide, rippling the side netting.
Barcelona are pushing for a go-ahead goal and Edgar Badia is being kept busy. He makes saves from Ferran Torres and Memphis Depay, who both could have done better.
Elche launch a very impressive counter attack, working a cross towards substitute Ponce. But, his headers flies over the bar. That was a nice move, though, from Elche to warn Barcelona that they’re still dangerous in attack.
Fidel conjures up an excellent cutback to Pere Milla, who first-times a shot. But, Marc-Andre ter Stegen is able to make a terrific save, keeping the score level.
Barcelona have equalised, with Ferran Torres making it 1-1. He stays onside as Jordi Alba brings down a cross, able to poke it past Edgar Badia. The substitute makes the difference.
Barcelona are back on the attack and Ferran Torres is involved again. Dani Alves puts a dangerous cross in from the right and it falls to Ferran, but he awkwardly volleys over.
Elche win a freekick in a dangerous area, but they can’t make the most of it. Several players stand over it and it’s ultimately Lucas Boye who takes, but he fires straight into the wall.
It’s an instant impact from Ferran Torres, who bursts forward and gets an early ball into the danger area. Johan Mojica manages to clear, at the second attempt not the first.
Barcelona have made a substitution for the second half, with Ferran Torres coming on for Gavi. He receives some last-minute instructions and then comes on, looking to make a difference.
After a slow start to this game, there were several chances towards the end of the half. Frenkie de Jong had two of them, but it was Elche who scored the only goal so far as Fidel made the most of a rare Pedri mistake.
Elche take the lead, as Pedri makes a weird clearance that goes right into Fidel‘s path. He then finishes perfectly from a tight angle, rippling the net to make it 1-0 to the home team.
Frenkie de Jong has had a shot cleared off the line by a defender and now he has a shot saved by Elche goalkeeper Edgar Badia, who pushes a shot away for a corner that comes to nothing.
Now, Elche have another chance. It’s Tete Morente this time, who sees the ball drop to him inside the area, but his strike is over the crossbar. That was better, though, from Elche.
Barcelona keep pushing, but then Elche go up the other end and Pere Milla finds enough space to get a shot off. He fires over, but at least he’s keeping Ter Stegen alert.
Barcelona come so close to opening the scoring, but Elche‘s Diego Gonzalez clears a Frenkie de Jong shot off the line. Dembele had provoked the rebound for De Jong, but the Catalan side waste the chance.
Jordi Alba tests Edgar Badia, but he doesn’t catch it as he’d have liked as he has to shoot with his weaker right foot. Still, it’s a tricky one for the Elche goalkeeper, who eventually deals with it.
Elche go up the other end and they win a corner, but then Barcelona try to launch a counter attack. They aren’t precise enough to do so, letting Elche off the hook.
It’s good play from Barcelona as Gerard Pique finds Dembele, who puts in a dangerous low cross towards Aubameyang. But, he is closely marked and can’t turn it in.
Barcelona try to get Ousmane Dembele involved and he cuts inside and unleashes a shot towards Elche‘s goal, but it flies well over. He has been effective in recent games, so let’s see what he does next time he’s on the ball.
It has been an even contest so far. Barcelona are edging possession, but Elche have had a few forays forward of their own. Let’s see if Barcelona can break their hosts down.

Barcelona’s social media team have posted a video of the Estadio Martinez Valero, which shows that there are very cloudy conditions in Elche today.
Last season saw Barcelona go to Elche and win 2-0, as Riqui Puig scored his first LaLiga Santander goal in the 89th minute to make sure of the three points.
Barcelona ran out 3-2 winners against Elche at the Camp Nou earlier this season, but it was a nervy match for the Catalans. After Ferran Jutgla and Gavi gave Barcelona a 2-0 lead, Tete Morente and Pere Milla scored two goal in a couple of second-half minutes to draw things level. Then, in the 85th minute, Nico Gonzalez fired home to secure the win for Barcelona.
